GMDSS

Comprehensive Coastal Communications

What is GMDSS?

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is a comprehensive set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase the safety of maritime navigation and facilitate the swift response to emergencies at sea. Mandated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), GMDSS is designed to perform automatic distress alerting and location in situations where manual activation might not be possible, ensuring all ships, irrespective of size or sailing area, are capable of receiving and transmitting distress signals. This system relies on various elements, including satellite and terrestrial radio systems, which work together to provide seamless and reliable communication coverage worldwide.
